House of Worship or U Store It?

NCT link
Why does the new proposed Faith Community Church by the Sea look like an outlet mall or a self storage?

It used to be that a local church would be interesting and make up for the mediocre architecture in a town but I guess no more. Now even our churches look like the Alberston's shopping plaza. It's a shame that such extreme homogenization has reached our spiritual centers.

I like the Lutheran church off Balour Drive, it has some dynamic qualities.

The funky but not funky enough to save from the bulldozer Lutheran church on Santa Fe (by the new roundabout) has an interesting stained glass interior.

I don't expect any new churches to be as outlandish as the Self Realization Fellowship. The only reason this iconic church really works is it's location. The yuppie haters probably don't want to admit this but the SRF really is the heart and soul of Encinitas that makes us unique from other beach towns.

  1. Some of the churches get started by holding services in industrial or business parks. Space is available and plenty of parking on Sundays or at night.

The business park look in a residential area.

  2. Yeah, it seems like a step backwards. Believe it or not it's possible for a church on a tight budget to build something beautiful and stylish without resorting to stucco, you just gotta have faith in your architect.

  3. Jesus was a carpenter. What would Jesus build?

  4. When are you going to post a shot and write a review of the new Welcome To Leucadia sign at the north end of town?

  5. "I've received treatment at Scripps on three occasions," said Commissioner Bill Snow. "I think it's a marvelous institution ---- and parking's a bitch."

A public official actually said that? Incredible....

  6. Thank goodness for SRF and Encinitas.
"The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
You're closer to God's heart in a garden,
Than any place else on earth."

  7. Save the Stained GlassMay 02, 2006 2:29 AM

I hope we can save the stained glass windows, at least, at the church off of Santa Fe, near the round-about.

We could do that can't we?

  8. Speaking of Roundabout, Isn't that thing the greatest. It looks really good. Finally a project the City can be proud of.

  9. I agree. The tree is fabulous -very "Six Feet Under".

  10. Cheers to the roundabout....lets get more of them built!....the nice roundabouts will offset the dulldrum box architecture that going in around the area.

  11. Stop the realtors from using the round-about as a sign board and I would be a lot happier. Why doesn't code enforcement work on the weekends?

Thank you for posting on the Leucadia Blog.
