Groovy Encinitas Art Tile Trash Can Database

I confess, I love the groovy tile art trash cans that are all over Encinitas. I never knew how many of them there are scattered around town. The people responsible for their existence have a nice website with a complete photo gallery of the groovy trash cans.

  1. I like them too. They are unique and add local character to the area. Much better than a generic trashcan.

  3. Most of them are ugly and make our city look trashy. Some are pretty good. I guess art is in the eye of the beholder. None are as nice as Fairy Mary.

  4. These artistic endeavors to our community would not exist without Richard J. Hinger. Richard is a local artist and has used his energy to share local art and assist in getting kids involved in art and nurture the value of contributing to their society. This projects helps make our town better in many ways.

Thank you Richard. Keep up the good work. Thank you for offering your time and caring.

Most of the art on the outside of the trash can containers should be inside the trash can!!!

  10. painter of light is enlightened in his or her observations. Those cans are an example of art gone wild. Why do we all have to suffer someones ugly mosaics? Notice I didn't refer to it as art.

Put them all in Leucadia since they are definitely funky ugly.

Simple because someone goes without sleep for days on end and then put some hallucinogenic image on a trash can container does not make it art. Again and again this, if it "Feels good" it must be good and therefore OK... has got to stop. These trash can containers make Encinitas the laughing stock of SD County.

We need more country cottages with babbling brooks and cobblestone walkways lined by flowers and a pink and blue hued skies with white picket fenced gates on our trash can containers. This is ART!!!

I know of what I speak for I am, the Painter of Light!!!

  16. We had a little tile party at my house that lasted a whole month, so about a dozen of these were made and fired in my kiln in the garage. Laura from Stonesteps Haircutting did one,(at Beacons) so did Bob Nanninga,(J Street),Cat Seyler did two, Scott Saw did the on the can with my boogie boarding one,(Grandciew), and I have two at Moonlight Beach and one outside of the La Paloma theatre. Richard Hinger thought that portrait was Nick Cave,so thanks for clearing that up,EN. A lot of kids from Sunset did these. ("Feed My Ego" is my fave EN song).

The techinique is pretty cool. These are just commerical tiles, and you paint overglazes on 'em, fire them for four hours at 1600 degrees and the colors don't fade or peel off.
