More Leucadia Big Trees to be Removed

All of the big trees in the center median in front of Scott's Automotive are posted for removal. As you can see from this photo the city has not been trimming branches or taking care of these trees so they look a bit raggedy (the one in the center looks pretty good). The city says it is going to plant replacement trees but nobody can tell you when or what kinds of trees. The iconic Leucadia Hwy 101 tree canopy is going to completely gone soon. *sigh*

I heard that the big Torrey Pines in front of the Cardiff library are getting cut down this week. Efforts to save them from disease didn't pan out.*
*Correction: the Cardiff library Torrey Pines were not diseased, their roots had been cut when the library was built which led to their doom. I also hear that new trees will not be planted. Bummer.

  1. Orpheus Park will lose its best trees too. After years of developing them into healthy adult trees that provide wonderful shade to the many park users (that fill the park three days a week, every week), they are going to be replaced by "dwarf varieties". The excuse is the upkeep - the real reason is the devilish aggreement with the neighboring condos who don't want their views infringed on. So there will be no shade this summer... we'll see if the dwarves can be gotten under by next summer. City government is making a mistake!!!!

  2. The City always seems to be making the worst decisions. Why?

  3. What a nightmare. I'll tell ya what they're gonna replace the median trees with. More dwarf varieties. Nice the city invades Leucadia to destroy it's ambiance. I'm done.

  4. The city makes the worst decisions because management and the Council sucks. The employees have it right. Think of it. A great union gets them (because of Council and Cotton's stupidity) a 3.5% raise for the next four years in a row; great benefits, including healthcare; penions; and 4 day work weeks. Plus, and this is the best part, they can't get fired. They don't even have to work. How many of us can say the same, unless we ae government employees? They do not HAVE to be nice to the citizens because Cotton or Council and Cotton don't care if they are nice to us. Go figure.

  5. If you fel the city council is so bad, why do they keep getting reelected?

The city doesn't always make the worse decisions for me.

Take the Hall property as an example. Instead of working with the surrounding community, compromising and coming to an agreement for building a park, they opted to stick with the special interest soccer clubs proposal. As a result, I will be highly employed through this depression using all the money that could have been used to build something or Trees. But who needs Trees, when you can have all kinds of paperwork and depositions from me.

Keep up the good work and keep all of us Lawyers employed. THANKS CITY COUNCIL.

  7. If you have to ask why Council gets reelected then you don't know City politics. Council is only a pawn a in a larger game.

  8. The three Torrey pines in front of the Cardiff Library are now in the process of being cut down. Jose Ponte, the representative from the county, made a sincere effort to cooperate with locals to try to save the trees. Alas, it wasn't possible.

Unfortunately the plan is to replace the trees with a low-water succulent garden. Jeez, the Torrey pine is a native, naturally adapted to survive with low rainfall. So we will get a mostly concrete, steel, and asphalt site with a tiny fringe of low growing plants. Too bad.

  9. The Torrey Pine is drought tolerant. It grows without any irrigation.

  10. If you think govt makes poor decisions regarding trees, wait until they get their hands on your health care!!

  11. Amen, 9:14 AM. The government "gives" with one hand and robs you blind with the other.

  13. The City Council does not run the city or make the important decisions, staff controls all aspects of our local government. They get raises whenever they want, as much time off as they want, close when they want, etc. The only reason we are here is to pay their salaries, health care and retirement. They do not feel they are our public servants. Staff makes sure who is elected to further their goals, not ours. There is no recession at the City of Encinitas, in fact they have unlimited funding for themselves.

  14. Yes, so sad that Stocks and Bond were re-elected. I am so sorry we are losing our lovely trees. A pro-active Council could have made a difference by passing tree ordinances that protected trees rather than putting views first.

What a crying shame! One can only hope that some of the hope and change at the Federal level might "trickle down." I feel if people were more involved and aware, we would not still have the same dreadful three man majority "running" the City.

Yes, Phil Cotton, put into place by Guerin, and the three men, is part of the problem, for sure.

LOL. Sadly, all the health care in the world won't cure ignorance.
