I dunno. When I see new newspapers cropping up in the hardest of times, I gotta feel for the Coast News and North County Times who are probably having enough trouble keeping afloat. Besides, why don't they call it the Coast Dispatch? On the flipside, thanks Scott Chatfield for saving 760!
Because someone else had the name first.
If they want any online readership they will have to add a comments section. The current issue has a story about the street fair which I hate. And would like to see closed down for good, but I can't comment on that, so what good the the paper??
Agreed - the street fair is an abomination - two days of hell, lost sales, increased shoplifting. It is a total myth that fair goers eventually come back and become customers It takes weeks to make up the lost sales.
How much to rent a space for the Street Fair? Multiply that by about 200 booths and someone is making a lot of money. Where does the money go? Its held on our streets, so is the city making lots of dough?
The money goes to DEMA.
Where is the public record regarding monies spent by the city and monies tanken in by DEMA? Somebodys getting rich. Or paid off.
Public infrastructure is being used. I think it would be healthy for the books to be open and the street fair permits to be competitively issued. I am certain that DEMA will still come out on top but it might diffuse any structural relationships that promote a good ol boy network. Seems like the same should be done for races that shut down our roads. Some of those races are big money to their professional promoters. The city should be maximizing its return and make sure the disruption to the public and local merchants is worth it.
2:02 Then the caption "Coast Dispatch Returns in Online Form" would be incorrect.
The boards of each local business organizations review all monitary transactions every 30 days. They do not conspire to make any private party rich. Their funds usually go right back into the community in many ways with appropriate amounts agreed upon to pay directors / rents / office expenses etc. No one gets rich, but everyone benefits from the few locals who work hard sincerely endeavoring to make Encinitas more enjoyable and vital. But if someone doesn't like events or the revenue they generate, there are probably more important things for them to watch on TV.
Just a note from the guy who runs the site itself ... Thanks for the post here on the blog. The North Coast Current site is a labor of love more than anything, and it's been run on and off since 2002.I bought the full Coast Dispatch microfilm library from the last of the recent publishers earlier this decade. (Digitizing about 75 years worth of material is quite costly and probably won't happen for a while.) I also have several years worth of hard copies. As a working journalist and college professor, I do have to go where the paycheck goes. So, as I have in the past, I am working elsewhere in local news media right now. When I do that, I put the website on hold so as not to create a conflict of interest with my present employer.
yo... thank you for this thread :))
