Train company should do something about the dust/ground cover.
Wwwwwwrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaa!!!(the sound of a chain saw at 120 decibels)
No trees allowed. What part of no trees allowed don't you understand.
I've lived here in Leucadia for 40 years, one block from the tracks. Never in all those years has a tree fallen that endangered train passengers. This is a bogus argument for clear cutting so they have no water or maintenance costs.
When a tree is removed, is another planted in its place?
10:12Not necessarily. Some mitigation was done with the trees that were removed in front of the post office, and at Roadside park. But the 9 trees recently clear cut by NCTD were planted by the city less than 10 years ago and NCTD has no intention of replenishing them. They were removed because they "could become a danger" (in 80 years if they weren't trimmed properly). We need to finalize the Streetscape so we can begin planting the new trees. Until then more and more of our canopy will be destroyed. Especially now that NCTD has an agenda to clear cut all trees on the east side of 101.
Once again it shows that Arborists are hacks. Any person with a few hours, some experience chain sawing down trees, and a few dollars can take the ridiculous courses and become a certified Arborist hack... Then you get your business from becoming a certified hack to write letters supporting senseless tree removals. Our Government employees show zero common sense time and time again. The once great Leucadia canopy is gone. All within a 20 year period. The area is blight. I sure hope the streetscape plan gets approved so the planting and watering of trees can begin.
As long as the RR is a shithole the 101 will be a crap zone. Don't waste your money on fixing up Leucadia if NCTD is just going to crap on you.
NCTD can not make money without using the right of way for a revenue stream. Their services lose money. Removing the trees is step two of re-making this part of the LOS-SAN corridor, as they call it. Step 1 was double tracking. NCTD's plan is increase usage with double tracking, with additional passing tracks. They tell us this is so that they can subsidize other services. However, they also know this allows them to expand, and improve pensions and benefits. The board of NCTD is made up of people from our city councils, losers who won't do a damn thing for any other city (or sometimes their own).
Fred is right. If we adopt a streetscape plan, we can start planting trees. We will not be allowed to plant trees that will grow to be a danger to trains, but probably will be able to plant something on the right of way. We might be able to plant bigger trees on the east side, if space is available with one lane north. If we want this, roundabout should be utilized to allow the traffic to flow in the most efficent manner. If we work together we can make the long awaited improvements we deserve. SUPPORT THE STREETSCAPE
I support the streetscape and all forward thinking Leucadians do also.
Jerome is now blogging for the replacement to Red County:http://sdrostra.com/
"Don't waste your money on fixing up Leucadia if NCTD is just going to crap on you."Oh, so do nothing and let things get worse? Where are you coming from? All Streetscape trees will be planted outside of the RR right of way where they will not be removed. But currently, any tree outside of NCTD's 50' right of way is protected by law. I have the penal code. Unlawfully removed trees makes NCTD liable for a $10,000 fine per tree plus replacement costs. Anybody got a 50' tape?
I would love to know way the rail corridor thru Santa Barbara and Montecito can be tree lined on both sides Eucs included while all we're allowed is waste land.
1eyedmike - the answer is because those communities are considerably more upscale and consequently their residents have more political pull. It all boils down to dollars. Have you ever seen the railroad's right of way through downtown San Juan Capistrano? Totally shaded, winding path, picnic tables...
Sgt. Friday - You are right. Our residents do not spend enough time or money to:1. Get a council (and NCTD rep) that cares about us2. Lobby NCTD

Lobby StocksThe email to council is on the left on this home page. Yet the whole council our thoughts on how Stocks has represented us. What has it gained us, having a NCTD board member on our council? He did not use his influence to stop the removal of the orange bags, after 9 months, when citizens contacted NCTD directly, which caused the bags to be removed. He has never commented on our concerns or offered any insights. Would he have allowed that to happen in his neck of the woods? The question is not, do we know that Leucadia is part of Encinitas, but does he?
Jerome doesn't care about Leucadia and you don't know why? I would suggest that you take a look at the posts and you will have your answer.
I see the NCTD, headed by Stocks, removing trees so that people react and adopt whatever streetscape plan is on his agenda (an agenda bought and paid for). Why? Another feather in his cap when he runs for Assembly..his spin is delivering what the people wanted. We know different.
The posts on Jerome are a direct reflection of the way he treats Leucadia on issues, especially trees. You don't see others getting raked like Jerome. Jerome makes it seem he has declared war on Leucadia at times. what I don't understand is why? Is it because he hates certain people from Leucadia? Is it because people like the past president (before Rachell) of LTC alienated Council so badly it will take years to pass?
