But if it's history that disturbs you, I think that's a good thing. Your next step is to learn something from it, not pretend it didn't happen. (I didn't make any of that stuff up.) It's just that comprimising Pagans by letting them keep their winter solstice rituals and calling them Christian by pretending it's Christ's birthday, the St. Nick lie, the tree, the mistletoe, the Yule stuff etc. has nothing to do with honoring Christ. Neither would any parade in Encinitas, so far. No matter what it's called.

but if we're gonna get real, Christ wasn't born on 12-25 anyway. And when the 3 wise men visited him they went into a HOUSE when he was 2 years old. Not a manger.

Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the weeklong celebration. The festival began when Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.” Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman.

The ancient Greek writer poet and historian Lucian (in his dialogue entitled Saturnalia) describes the festival’s observance in his time. In addition to human sacrifice, he mentions these customs: widespread intoxication; going from house to house while singing naked; rape and other sexual license; and consuming human-shaped biscuits (still produced in some English and most German bakeries during the Christmas season).

The problem was that there was nothing intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalia’s concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus’ birthday.

Because of its known pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the Puritans and its observance was illegal in Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681

We can't use St Nick because 'St' denotes Saint, a no-no.
Another taboo is using 'holiday' in our everyday language as it signifies 'holy day' used by Christians and Jews.
It offends those of us non-believers and should become law.

BTW, those mugs were made by Vadna's Mugs of Leucadia that was a pretty famous pottery shop located where the corner frame shop is now. Vadna's had a large lit sign on a pole that was shaped like one of their mugs and it revoved continuously, night and day. (And sweaked a lot!) Between the bar being there forever and Morgan, it's always been a loud corner.

Vadna's funky signature mug had a dripping volcano look to it. They came in many colors. There are usually some for sale on ebay. Oh my, here's one now...

Vadna's was prolific in the 50's and 60's.

Nice collection! I have the 1961 mug for sale in my shop if the collector is interested in it.
